2008 LONDON SHORT FILM SHOWCASE DRAWS LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL INTEREST

August 08, 2008

The London Short Film Showcase got its start last year when local filmmakers, Jason Clarke and Darryl Callcott were looking to premier their short film, “What Floor.” The pair sought other local filmmakers to share the spotlight and an event was born.  Last year’s Showcase featured 4 films from the London area, with profits being shared by the filmmakers and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

Fast-forward one year; the 2008 London Short Film Showcase will feature 20 short films from London and abroad.  35 per-cent of the profits raised this year will go to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, with remaining profits going to the filmmakers.  Clarke and Callcott are still at the helm, though they will not be featuring a film this year.

“No, we don’t have an entry this year.  We’ve got some projects in the works, but we’ve been too hard at work planning the events to do much in the way of filming.” Clarke laments.

To his credit this year’s event has added features, spanning three days in three different locations across town.

The Showcase kicks off on Friday August 22 with FilmWorks, a networking event for those involved with the cinematic arts in London and surrounding area.  The event also serves as the launch of OFTEN (London’s Online Film and Television Entertainment Network), official sponsor of the 2008 London Short Film Showcase.  Doors open at 7:00 p.m. at The Arts Project, 302 Dundas Street.

The film screenings take place at Rainbow Cinemas in the Galleria Mall on Saturday August 23.  The films are divided into three separate screenings measuring about an hour each.  Screenings take place at 1:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 4:30 p.m.  They are $10 each to view, or $20 to view all three.  A People’s Choice film from each screening will be featured the following evening.

The 2008 London Short Film Showcase wraps up at The London Tap House, 545.5 Richmond Street, starting at 7:00 p.m.  The Closing Night Gala Event, features the seven favourite films of the weekend.  The three People’s Choice films will be joined by the four highest scoring films of the weekend, as determined by the 2008 London Short Film Showcase selection committee.

Tickets for all of the weekend’s events are available online at http://www.londonshortfilmshowcase.com or at London Chapters locations.

Tickets for film screenings are also available at Rainbow Cinemas in Galleria Mall.

Tickets for the Closing Night Gala Event are also available at The London Tap House at 545.5 Richmond Street.
